What is Marldon Garden Of Rest?
Unlike conventional churchyards or municipal cemeteries, Marldon Garden of Rest is maintained as a wildlife area, preserving the natural landscape. The grass is left to grow freely, cut periodically to support the meadow’s ecology. A striking avenue of silver birches lines the garden. Although only newly planted we hope that in time their delicate leaves shimmering in the breeze, will offer shade and tranquility. Throughout the site, a variety of trees, carefully chosen for their seasonal beauty and ability to support local wildlife, bring colour and vibrancy throughout the year. These trees provide nectar, berries, and shelter for birds and pollinators, enriching the natural balance of the garden. The ground has not been consecrated and is open to all faiths and beliefs. Individual plots may be blessed by private arrangement.
Is the burial plot for local people only?
The Garden of Rest is open only to people with a proven connection to Marldon, Westerland & Compton i.e born or died here, have lived in village, have immediate family who live here or have family already in the old graveyard or going forward, a family member in the new Garden of Rest. – regardless of faith, whether you are using a funeral director or not, having a religious ceremony, a secular ceremony, or no ceremony at all.
Is the ground consecrated?
No but you may make arrangements for an individual plot to be blessed. The ground is open to all faiths and beliefs.
Will we need to use a Funeral Director?
Not necessarily, although you may find it easier. The Parish Council cannot offer advice on ceremonies. If you are considering using a Funeral Director, an internet search will show you local companies. Some will have used the site before and could offer some invaluable advice but we cannot make any recommendations.
Can I visit the site before I buy a plot?
Yes absolutely. In fact we would recommend that you or a representative do so. Anyone is welcome to visit the site during daylight hours.
Can I book plots for my whole family?
Yes. One plot will only hold up to two urns you must book a double depth plot for this, you may also book side by side plots for husband/wives/partners these will be allocated at the time of the first internment. You may book plots for a family but these will not be next to each other plots will be allocated at the time of use. A certificate will be issued for pre booked plots for your records. Please include the information in your funeral plan and/or will.
Can I have a Memorial without the Ashes?
Absolutely. If your loved one’s ashes have been scattered elsewhere, you can still honour their memory by purchasing a plot and placing a memorial stone. This creates a lasting place of remembrance, offering you a peaceful space to visit, reflect, and keep their presence close in a meaningful way.
Can I have a headstone?

Can I Plant a Tree?
While we deeply appreciate the wish to contribute to this special space, a carefully planned selection of trees has already been planted in the Garden of Rest to create a balanced and serene environment. To preserve the beauty and harmony of the area, no further planting is permitted, ensuring the space remains open, peaceful, and sustainable for years to come.
Can Pets Ashes be buried in the garden of rest?
